Carpenter ants are not a nuisance all the time. They can be beneficial to man because they do eat other insects. When ants become unwelcome guests in or around your home that is when they need to be exterminated. Their nesting habits are found in moist wood such as landscape ties, old stumps from a tree that was once removed and from old fence posts . They often nest in areas that are hidden such as, window frames, basements, and attics as well. They will hibernate up under wood shingles for the winter months or hollow doors, or just about any area that is damp. Carpenter ants will rarely do extensive damage to wood.
